The aerophone family includes all instruments that produce sound by causing air to vibrate. The vibration may be brought about in various ways: across an opening (e.g. flute), a double reed (e.g. shawm),or a single reed (e.g. chalumeau). The way the instrument is played will determine the aerophone subfamily to which the instrument belongs.
