Conjurer

The conjurer himself is not a musician, although his sleight-of-hand tricks are often accompanied by music. The music both aids in the spectacle of the performance, making participating more attractive, and adds further stimuli to overwhelm the mark (person to be tricked). The con-team is completed by a child who robs the mark while he is engrossed by the spectacle of the trick and the accompanying music. Similar cons have existed since the early fifteenth century. As this time, there is only a single image in the Musiconis collection that depicts a conjurer, along with a bagpiper and the child—the mark is not depicted. For a famous depiction of a conned mark, see The Conjurer [1] by Jerôme Bosch (c. 1502).
