> Woman

In Romanesque and Early Gothic art, women are most often represented as dancers and acrobats. In some cases, they are examples carnal music, but this referential system must be confirmed by the narrative context or the presence of a figure symbolizing lust (nudity, billy goat, etc.).

Women sometimes appear as personifications of music, in this case as incarnations of scholarly music.

By the end of the Middle Ages, female musicians do appear. They are expressions of courtly culture (aristocratic music, courtly music).
